A Fabulous Holiday Music Weekend
I was fortunate to see and be a part of two amazing performances this weekend. First was the Inter-generational Kwanzaa Choir which put on a wonderful show at the Indiana Historical Society’s Frank and Katrina Basile Theater. Led by artistic director Deborah Asante the performance included the African National Anthem (in Swahili), the 7 Principles of Kwanzaa, a sneak peak at MLK in hip hop world, and a tribute to Michael Jackson. The costumes were dazzling and equally dazzling were the performances.

Rest of the Images from the Kwanzaa Choir can be seen at : Kwanzaa Choir
The second performance that I got to see was the Holiday Classic “The Nut Cracker” presented by The Indiana Ballet Company and The Russian Ballet Academy of Indiana. This was a special show put on by the Company and Dancers as part of the “Hopes and Dreams” initiative for the benefit of approximately 850 children. Some of these children are currently confronting major challenges such as poverty, homelessness and serious illness. The dances were based on original choreography by Vainonen with additional choreography provided by Artistic Director Alyona Yakovleva. I was one of the volunteer photographers covering the event, and I got to do some group photos of kids with the dancers after the performance.

Stormy Winter Skies Make an Excellent Backdrop for Stunning Images

I love how trees and foliage pop against a dark grey stormy sky. I took these photos early this morning. I was working on a project and stepped out of the basement when I noticed this scene through my windows. It was just marvelous. I ran back to my basement and grabbed my trusty Pentax Spotmeter V and Nikon D70 + 60mm AF-D Micro-Nikkor + B+W Warming Filter. I quickly metered the shot at ISO200 and placed the expsoure for trees at 1 stop above the Spotmeter reading. Here are some images from that series – enjoy!

New Born Portraits for Meredy by Koduri

I consider myself a fairly experienced photographer having worked with artists, couples, groups, and gatherings but never a new born other than my own kid, Mira. I spent a lot of time planning for this session knowing that nothing is predictable with a new born. Meredy was a joy to photograph and her mom and grand ma were extremely helpful in posing the baby and making sure that she was comfortable. We broke the 3 hour session into several mini-sessions to give plenty of feeding and diaper changing breaks. Here are some selected photos from that session.

Asante Family Portrait Session

Probably one of the most photogenic families that I had the privilege of photographing. Deborah Asante is a renowned story teller and runs the highly regarded Asante Children’s Theatre. For this session I used a single softbox and a reflector. The softbox was on camera right and the reflector on camera left to fill in shadows. There was a big window to the left but it did not help much as it was pretty late in the evening. I used one of the walls of the living room as the background which worked out really well.

Environmental Portrait Session with Paul Poteet
This week I had the opportunity to do some environmental portraits and head shots for a very popular Weatherman, Radio and TV Personality, and a new media maven Paul Poteet. I used a single Nikon SB24 Speedlight in conjunction with a shoot through umbrella as a light source and a reflector to fill in shadows. The only other light source was a west facing window. The studio was a bit small but we found a way to get the light where we needed it to be. It was funny watching Paul having imaginary conversations on the microphone with imaginary guest while I clicked away. Here are some selected images from that session. Hope you like them.

Paul has a new web based program “Paul Poteet’s Gotta Eat“. You should check it out.
